The reading passages on the TOEFL iBT deal with subjects that students are usually studied in the first and second year college These include the natural sciences, social sciences, business and the arts.
The language used in the reading passages is formal and academic.
However, you don't need any specific knowledge of the subject to do well in the reading section.
